Teaching Hong Kong children the real value of money — from lai see to everyday spending decisions

Piggy Wise Limited

Who I Am

Fourteen years working with Hong Kong families. Eight thousand kids taught. One simple mission: make money education actually work.

My journey started at home. My three kids got lai see money every Lunar New Year and spent it within days. They had no idea why. So I started asking questions — and didn’t stop.

After teaching in primary schools for five years, I realized the problem wasn’t with kids. It’s that nobody teaches them money in a way that actually makes sense. We hand them pocket money and expect them to understand savings. We take them shopping but never discuss needs versus wants. We give them Octopus cards without explaining how spending happens.

I went back to university. Got my Master’s in Education from HKU. Spent years researching how Hong Kong children actually spend money — their patterns, their confusion, their breakthroughs. In 2013, I created the Envelope Milestone System. It’s visual. It’s practical. It works because kids can see their progress.

Today I work with schools across Hong Kong, train educators, and help families build real financial awareness. Not through lectures. Through conversations about choices. Through piggy banks and envelope systems. Through everyday shopping trips where we actually talk about what we’re buying and why.

At Piggy Wise Limited, I lead curriculum development for programs that grow with children — from primary school basics through secondary school decisions about saving, earning, and spending.

What I Teach

Practical money education that actually sticks. Age-appropriate. Real-world. Built for Hong Kong families.

Lai See Money Management

How to help children understand this traditional gift. Rules that work by age. Decisions about saving versus spending. Making it meaningful instead of letting it vanish.

Pocket Money Systems

Clear rules adapted to your child’s age. From primary through secondary school. Responsibilities that grow. Systems families actually maintain because they’re simple.

Visual Goal Tracking

Piggy banks and envelope methods. Kids see progress. They understand how much they need. Savings becomes tangible, not abstract. Goals feel real because they look real.

Needs Versus Wants

Shopping conversations that teach. How to discuss choices in real time. Why we buy things. What’s actually needed. Turning errands into lessons kids remember.

Octopus Card Awareness

Teaching children how digital spending works. Checking balances. Understanding that taps mean money. Building awareness of everyday spending patterns through technology kids actually use.

Age-Appropriate Progression

Financial lessons that grow with children. Primary school basics. Secondary school decisions. Complexity increases as understanding deepens. No jumping ahead, no falling behind.

“Money education isn’t about numbers. It’s about understanding choices. When a child can see their lai see in an envelope and understand that buying something today means not having it tomorrow, that’s when real learning happens. We don’t need complicated lessons. We need conversations. Honest ones. During shopping trips. While checking Octopus card balances. When discussing why we save.”

My Teaching Philosophy

  • Money education works when it’s visual, practical, and connected to children’s real lives.
  • Age matters. What works for a 7-year-old doesn’t work for a 14-year-old — and that’s okay.
  • Hong Kong traditions like lai see aren’t outdated. They’re teaching opportunities if we frame them correctly.
  • Digital tools like Octopus cards aren’t the enemy. They’re real-world learning tools kids already use.
  • Parents are the real educators. My job is to help them have better conversations about money.
